For Immediate Release April 8, 2003
BSO Flutist to Perform With Youth Orchestra

Fenwick Smith,
second flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and 2003
MetYSO Artist in Residence will join with the young musicians of the Metrowest
Youth Symphony Orchestra at their Spring Concert on May 11. MetYSO, under the
musical direction of Gilbert R. Trout, will present a program of music by George
Gershwin, Benjamin Britten, and (with Mr. Smith) Antonio Vivaldi. As this
season's Artist in Residence, Mr. Smith has been attending rehearsals, sharing
his approach to musicianship in question and answer sessions, and challenging
the young musicians by playing alongside them.
A member of the BSO since 1978 and the Boston Chamber Music Society since
1984, Mr. Smith's annual Jordan Hall recitals have been a regular and crowd
pleasing feature of Boston's concert calendar for 24 years. He has performed on
Baroque flute with Boston's leading early-music ensembles, and was for thirteen
years a member of the contemporary music ensemble Boston Musica viva. Mr. Smith
has introduced to Boston audiences Lukas Foss' Renaissance Concerto and the
flute concertos of John Harbison and Christopher Rouse.
A true renaissance man, Fenwick Smith builds both flutes and houses. A
builder of flutes for twelve years at Boston's Vernon Q. Powell Flutes, Inc,
he plays a flute of his own construction. In his off hours during the BSO's summer
seasons in the Berkshires, he designed and built a post-and-beam house in
Richmond, Massachusetts, six miles from Tanglewood; his effort is described in The
Builder's Secret: Learning the Art of Living Through the Craft of
Building by George Ehrerhaft. In another recent undertaking, Mr. Smith
converted the former Roslindale Masonic Lodge to a state-of-the-art venue for
acoustic recording.
The public is invited to MetYSO's Spring Concert, 3pm on May 11 to enjoy the
fruits of Mr. Smith's residency with the Metrowest Youth Symphony Orchestra, as
well as an Open Rehearsal, 2-5 on April 27. Both the Concert and the Open
Rehearsal are free of charge, and will be held on the Framingham campus of
MassBay Community College, 19 Flagg Street where MetYSO is in residence. For
directions to the campus, visit the orchestra's website at www.MetYSO.org.
